Following the launches of the ASUS NUC 14 Pro, NUC 14 Pro+, ROG NUC, and NUC 14 Performance, ASUS has announced plans to launch a new 'Lunar Canyon' AI mini-PC in September 2024 that is based on Intel’s Lunar Lake platform and housed in a form factor that is smaller than 0.6-litres. As a comparison, the NUC 14 Pro has a sub-0.5-litre chassis.
The decision to launch with Lunar Lake seems interesting given the problems Intel has had with its 13th and 14th Gen desktop CPUs, but it is important to note that the mobile CPUs from the same generation are not impacted. This last point is key as the Lunar Lake processors are mobile processors targeted to support Microsoft's new Copilot+ experience while taking on the likes of AMD and Qualcomm.
The Lunar Lake processors will feature a next-gen NPU (Neural Processing Unit) that Intel says will deliver over 40 TOPS (or tera operations per second) of AI performance. The Meteor Lake powered NUC 14 Pro and NUC 14 Pro+ can do around 10+ NPU TOPS by comparison. In addition to the higher performing NPU, Intel says that Lunar Lake will also be equipped with over 60 GPU TOPS delivering more than 100 platform TOPS.
