According to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, it’s going to take a while more before we see updated versions of Apple’s most powerful desktops – the Mac Studio and Mac Pro.
Gurman said that Apple will likely only unveil updated versions of the Mac Studio and Mac Pro with M4 chips in the second half of 2025.
To recap, the Mac Studio and Mac Pro were last updated at WWDC 2023 last year. The two were powered by the fastest versions of the M2 chip – the M2 Max and M2 Ultra.
In other words, don’t expect M3 versions of the Mac Studio and Mac Pro. This makes sense because the M3 chip is said to be missing the high-speed UltraFusion interconnect – the technology that fuses two chips together to create an “Ultra” variant chip.
As for M4 Macs, word on the street is that the first Macs to feature Apple’s newest M-series chip will be the 13 and 16-inch MacBook Pro. They are expected to be updated later this year, before Christmas, with the M4 Pro and M4 Max chips.
Those hoping for an updated MacBook Air will have to wait longer because rumours say the 13 and 15-inch MacBook Air will only be getting updated early next year. This seems plausible since the MacBook Air was updated earlier this year.
Furthermore, given that the MacBook Air is Apple's best-selling MacBook, it makes sense that Apple wants more time to ensure it has sufficient M4 chips to put into MacBook Airs.
