Is your hard disk drive running out of space? Good news, Western Digital, through HGST, now has a new helium-filled hard disk drive that packs a whopping 12TB of storage.
The drive is called the Ultrastar He12. It uses HGST's HelioSeal technology, which allows it to spin at a very brisk 7,200rpm.
It features 8 platters with each platter featuring an areal density of 864Gbits per inch. This means each platter can hold about 1.5TB of data.
The Ultrastar He12 will be available in both SATA and SAS interfaces. Sustained transfer rates are claimed to be in the region of around 240MB/s to 255MB/s for both reads and writes.
It was designed primarily for enterprise use, but hey, nothing is going to stop you from putting it in your NAS and creating your own personal datacenter.
