WD (part of Western Digital) and SanDisk have announced that the two companies are teaming up to create solid-state hybrid drive (SSHD) solutions. The hero product from this partnership is the 500GB WD Black SHHD that come in a 2.5-inch, 5mm form factor (7mm and 9.5mm form factors are also available) that we've reported last month. The SSHD brings together SanDisk’s iSSD (built on a 19nm process technology) and WD’s proprietary hybrid technology and high-capacity hard drive (however, WD didn't state the RPM for the hard drive used). The WD Black SHHD will also use industry standard SATA IO technology.
The WD Black 5mm SSHDs (available in 8 to 24GB iSSD configurations) are currently shipping to OEMs. WD is also shipping to OEMs the 7mm and 9.5mm SSHDs for portable devices. In other words, these hybrid drives aren’t immediately available at retail.
