Synology has been rolling out its new NAS server line-up over the past months, and its back with another one. The new DiskStation DS216+ is a versatile two-bay NAS server intended for home and small office users who require an efficient and secure storage solution for sensitive data, and also multimedia features like on-the-fly video transcoding.

It succeeds the old DiskStation DS215+, with upgraded internals that include a dual-core Intel Celeron N3050 processor and support for 4K video transcoding. Office users will be pleased to learn that it also supports Intel AES New Instructions (Intel AES-NI) encryption and is capable of reaching up to 111MB/s read and write speeds. In addition, it can carry out on-the-fly H.264 4K to 1080p video transcoding, which will appeal to home theater enthusiasts who want to stream their files to a separate device that might not support 4K video.

The DS216+ utilizes the Btrfs file system, which adds advanced data protection capabilities by enabling point-in-time snapshots and restores, built-in data integrity checks, metadata mirroring, and even quota control for shared folders.

In a sense, the DS216+ combines the best features of the DS216 and DS216play that came before it. In addition to the hardware video transcoding capabilities, this means tool-less drive bays with support for hot-swapping and a USB copy button as well. Other minor features also attest to Synology’s attention to detail – for instance, the front LED indicators have four levels of brightness controls to suit different user preferences.

The DS216+ runs DiskStation Manager (DSM) 6.0, which we’ve already covered in more detail here. It retails for US$299 and is now shipping globally.
