Seagate has just announced the official opening of its new S$100 million R&D center in Singapore.
Named "The Shugart" after Seagate's founder, Al Shugart, the new R&D center can house over 900 employees. It will also provide R&D for mobile storage products. Seagate's Singapore R&D team has been responsible for products such as the 5mm thick Laptop Ultrathin HDD and more.
Seagate CEO Steve Luzco said, "From the very first 1-inch drives used in digital music players, to the thinnest 2.5-inch drives used in ultra-books and mobile devices today, our Singapore R&D team has been instrumental in driving Seagate’s innovation leadership. The Shugart is a world-class facility that enables collaboration that will strengthen our technology leadership. We truly appreciate the Singapore government’s partnership and commitment in making this possible."
As a show of its commitment to Singapore, Seagate also announced a S$300,000 bursary program with the National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University.
