SanDisk has just revealed an SD card with a staggering 1TB of memory, currently the largest in existence today. The SDXC card is only a prototype, but it is nonetheless quite an impressive feat.

Western Digital, which now owns SanDisk, wasted no time in highlighting the fact that the company introduced a 64MB SD card only 16 years ago. Furthermore, it was just two years ago that SanDisk announced a 512GB SD card, which was the world’s biggest then as well.

There are currently no price or availability details regarding the 1TB card, but its release is almost an inevitability given the increasing demand for storage-intensive formats like 4K and 8K video, 360-degree recording, and virtual reality footage.

That said, the card is almost certain to be extremely expensive, with relatively slow read and write speeds. And you don’t even want to think about what will happen when you gleefully fill the card to its brim, only to have the data get corrupted.
