Early last month, we reported that Samsung has an 8TB SSD in the works. Turns out the rumours were right.

Their new SSD is called the 870 QVO and it's an incremental update to the current 860 QVO.

Apart from a new 8TB option, the 870 QVO uses Samsung's new 92-layer 3D QLC NAND. It also gets a new controller called the Samsung MKX.

It comes in a 2.5-inch form factor and connects via a SATA 6Gbps interface.

Sequential read and write speeds are largely unchanged at 560MB/s and 530MB/s respectively, while random read and write speeds will depend largely on whether its SLC cache has been expended.

No matter, the Samsung 870 QVO isn't a drive built for outright speed. It's for people who demand more capacity but do not want to go back to the dark ages of using a spinning HDD.

The new Samsung 870 QVO SSDs will be available for pre-order from 16 July 2020 with retail availability beginning on 14 August 2020 for the 1TB version. The other capacities will be available from 10 September 2020.
