Intel Unveils Atom Processor-Based NAS Platform

Intel has unveiled its new Atom-processor based platform for network-attached storage (NAS) solutions. Targeted at small businesses and home offices, these Intel Atom D2500 and 2550-based NAS devices are currently launched by companies such as ASUStor, QNAP and Thecus.

This Atom-processor based NAS platform is called Milstead and is powered by either an Intel Atom D2500 or D2550 CPU. These two Atom processors are dual-core processors and are both rated at a maximum of 10W TDP. The higher-end Atom D2550 supports hyper threading and sports a marginally faster integrated GPU.

Intel stated that the Milstead platform has support for both Windows and Linux for cross-platform file sharing. It supports up to six SATA drives with RAID and hot-swappable capabilities. Additional storage can be added by connecting up to fourteen external storage drives via USB. The platform has support for digital display while its dual-display feature of HDMI and/or D-Sub video connectivity options allow supported video displays to be connected directly to the NAS devices.

The vendors mentioned earlier have launched their products already, with ASUStor pushing the boundaries of the Milstead platform as one of NAS devices already has eight storage drive bays. For the Thecus N4800Eco, it features dual display options, with one HDMI port and a D-Sub one at its rear. The QNAP TS-569 Pro offers its own anti-virus solution in order to make file-sharing a safer and more secure affair.
