Fast, stylish and expensive, the LaCie Chrome external drive will appeal to connoisseurs

This tilted aluminum box with chrome mirror finish and dual M.2 SSD drives in RAID 0 is described to be a trophy for tech connoisseurs. After coming face-to-face with it, we certainly don't deny it, even if it's a little over-the-top. Would you pay US$1,400 for it?

This tilted aluminum box with chrome mirror finish is described to be a trophy for tech connoisseurs. Yet another exclusive design from LaCie, the Neil Poulton designed Chrome external drive houses dual 500GB M.2 SATA SSDs configured in RAID 0 to enable it to achieve really speedy transfer rates. Here’s a screenshot from Iometer showing off its sequential read performance:-

Since it uses SSDs, LaCie equipped the Chrome with a USB 3.1 Gen 2 transfer rate capability over a USB Type-C connector. That and the power connector are hidden behind a flap at the back of the Chrome:-

Other salient points of the LaCie Chrome include a “triple-cooling” system, magnetized cable management and a removable magnetized display stand that helps it balance confidently at an angle (as seen in the first photo).

It’s expected that the 1TB SSD-based LaCie Chrome would be expensive given its specs, features and design heritage, but we least expected a mind blowing suggested retail price of US$1,400. It’s no wonder that it’s marketed for tech connoisseurs! This makes the LaCie Sphere look more affordable in comparison, but take note that the Sphere still uses a traditional mechanical hard drive. The Chrome is many times faster with dual SSD drives.
