Western Digital Enters Wireless Home Networking Arena

Western Digital has taken a shot at yet another adjacent industry. Although external hard drives and storage devices have always been their main line of work, the Californian company has also dabbled in other areas like media players for instance. More recently, WD has made some inroads into the wireless networking field, despite entering a saturated market at this point. Four 802.11n routers were released under the My Net series, but what's interesting is that all four models are equipped with dual-band capabilities with different combinations of 300Mbps and 450Mbps speeds designed for HD streams.

Traffic prioritization is also one of the highlights for WD's new range of routers. Known as FasTrack, the device's networking algorithms are smart enough to channel and fast forward 'entertainment traffic' to multimedia peripherals like gaming consoles, media players, Smart TVs, tablets, and other wireless devices on the network. The router's interface is known as My Net Dashboard, with allegedly user-friendly features to help the less savvy manage the network settings. The My Net Central 900 is the cream of the crop. No surprises here that it's able to house an internal (1TB or 2TB) hard drive. And it's also good to know that the router supports IPv6, with simultaneous dual-band speeds of 450Mbps on both radios plus Gigabit ports on the hardware end.

Other models include the My Net N600, N750, and N900. There's no word on their local release so far, but we'll keep you posted once the WD's routers come around. For more info on hardware specifications, please click here.
