Samsung's new 60GHz Wi-Fi technology promises speeds of up to 4.6Gbps

Samsung has developed a new 802.11ad standard 60GHz Wi-Fi technology that aims to deliver transfer rates of up to a whopping 4.6Gbps, an increase of over five times the current speed limit.

Samsung has just announced that it has a developed new 60GHz Wi-Fi technology based on the 802.11ad standard that can deliver transfer rates of up to a whopping 4.6Gbps or 575MB/s. This represents a 2.7 times increase over the current maximum speed of 1.7Gbps offered by the latest AC-2400 class routers.

Thanks to these insane speeds, a 1GB file will take just 3 seconds to transfer. Samsung also said that thanks to its new Wi-Fi technology, uncompressed high-definition videos can be easily shared amongst devices.

Kim Chang Yong, Head of DMC R&D Center of Samsung Electronics, said: "Samsung has successfully overcome the barriers to the commercialization of 60GHz millimeter-wave band Wi-Fi technology, and looks forward to commercializing this breakthrough technology. New and innovative changes await Samsung’s next-generation devices, while new possibilities have been opened up for the future development of Wi-Fi technology.”

Additionally, Samsung also said that its new Wi-Fi technology will be able to better bridge the gap between theoretical and real-world speeds because it eliminates co-channel interference caused by devices using the same network. It is also able to overcome poor penetration properties of these high frequency signals by developing wide-coverage beam-forming antennas.

Samsung plans to put this new technology into commercialization next year and will integrate it into its latest products.
