Is deploying 5G in Singapore necessarily easier just because we’re smaller? Here, the big cities come out to play. #5g #connectivity

Which Asia Pacific city has the most reliable and consistent 5G connection? According to one network optimisation firm, it’s Seoul, in South Korea.

Opensignal published its November 2024 report, Benchmark for Mobile Experience in APAC Cities, which examined 18 cities in the Asia Pacific region for their 5G reliability and consistency

Note that this is at the city level, which means it doesn’t consider 5G networks in the rural provinces or prefectures of these featured territories.

The report found that Seoul (South Korea) was first in both 5G reliability (successful connections and completion of basic network-reliant tasks) and 5G consistency (enough network support for maintaining tasked-based performance while inside mobile apps).

Tokyo (Japan), Taipei (Taiwan), and Sydney (Australia) took the next three spots, with Singapore in fifth place for 5G reliability and consistency, with 896 points and 79%, respectively.

In comparison, Seoul scored 925 points for reliability out of a possible 1,000 and is 85% consistent.

While the report ranks Yangon (Myanmar) last, Opensignal caveated that the city was beset with nationwide Internet shutdowns and infrastructural damage to network towers, severely affecting the score.

In its previous country-based report on 5G coverage and experience, Opensignal found Singapore to be the best at 5G coverage, with 5G availability ranking second after India. However, the new November 2024 report found that Mumbai (India) has the best 5G availability at the city level. Again, Singapore is in fifth place.

5G availability refers to the time a user can connect to and stay on a 5G network. After all, most telcos have 4G/LTE as a fallback option in places where 5G cannot penetrate or gets overloaded. Singapore’s 5G availability currently sits at 37%, just slightly ahead of Bangkok’s (Thailand) 35.9%.
