Forget fiber, D-Link's new 5G NR Enhanced Gateway provides Wi-Fi for the home using 5G

5G is the next big thing for mobile connectivity and D-Link has just unveiled a 5G router at CES 2019 called the 5G NR Enhanced Gateway.

A router like this relies on 5G connectivity instead of traditional landlines like fiber broadband.

The key advantage of this is that it can bring high-speed internet to places where the fiber broadband infrastructure might not be in place.

This isn't a big problem in Singapore but given that mobile plans have become really attractive of late with very high or even unlimited data caps, this could be something to consider in future when 5G becomes mainstream.

Details are scarce but the 5G NR Enhanced Gateway will make use of a Qualcomm chipset and will have four external antennas for 5G connections. D-Link says "it delivers speeds up to 40x faster than the fixed broadband speed in the U.S," which is the equivalent about 2.8Gbps.

As for Wi-Fi, the 5G NR Enhanced Gateway supports Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) up to 2,600Mbps. It's a dual-band system so the 2.4GHz network supports speeds of up to 800Mbps and the 5GHz network does speeds of up to 1,733Mbps.

It also has five Ethernet ports. It has a single Gigabit Ethernet WAN port, three Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports, and a single LAN port that supports faster speeds of up to 2.5Gbps.

The D-Link 5G NR Enhanced Gateway is expected to go on sale in the second half of the year. Pricing has yet to be determined.
