Why compete for the Internet when you can hop aboard the Wi-Fi 6 train?

As a species, humanity generally adores the concept of equality, and history has shown that we’re more than willing to fight for our own fair share of things, be it food, space or more recently, Wi-Fi bandwidth.

Even in small two-person households today, it’s easy to forget how many devices we have connected to the Internet, much less the fact that each person generally owns more than one. From smartphones and computers to smart fridges and even robotic vacuums, everything clamours for bandwidth simultaneously, and sometimes your poor router just can’t keep up. Fortunately, you won’t have to worry about that if your home is kitted out for Wi-Fi 6, and Singtel is right here to lend a hand!

But what makes this new generation special? It’s a matter of specialisation. While previous generations of Wi-Fi struggled to keep multiple devices connected simultaneously, Wi-Fi 6 routers are equipped to do just that using technologies like Multi-User, Multiple Input, Multiple Output (MU-MIMO). This enhances the overall efficiency of the Wi-Fi network, thereby improving connectivity for multiple devices at the same time.

Of course, if you’re interested in digging deeper into Wi-Fi 6, here’s a more detailed article on how it works - check it out!

Choosing the right router

With so many bits of technology relying on the Internet these days, it’s hard to tell just how many devices you have connected to the Wi-Fi at any given time. Needless to say, Singtel recognises this, but more importantly, the telco knows you want ALL of them to remain connected.

To ensure that, they’ve updated their 24-month contract offerings to include Wi-Fi 6 AX5400 routers, and they’re top-grade models to boot. Conventionally, many Wi-Fi 6 bundles on the market, especially the smaller 1Gbps options tend to ship with middling entry-level routers, but that’s not the case with Singtel. The telco is going all in on value, so regardless of which contract you opt for, you’ll be taking home a high-performance router that’s easily worth its weight in gold.

Now, nothing rhymes better with “value” than “more value”, and one of the best parts of Singtel’s updated repertoire is that unlike its previous wave of offerings, you’ll no longer have to fork out extra for Wi-Fi 6 compatibilities. In addition, all of the new bundles feature loads of extra freebies, including a Singtel Optical Network Router for new sign-ups, a 500MB Mobile Broadband, a Home Line, and a free 12-month subscription to both Amazon Prime and Singtel Home Protect*.

For the all-around Web surfers

First up, those looking for excellent general-purpose Wi-Fi 6 routers will get lots of mileage out of the 1Gbps Enhanced or 1Gbps Plus bundles. The former, which costs S$47.90/mth (U.P. S$52.90/mth) comes with a Singtel AX5400 Wi-Fi 6 device, and is well-suited for daily Internet browsing on multiple devices.

Meanwhile, those who are fond of tech brand Linksys, or don’t mind paying more for a better workhorse router, can opt for the latter. The 1Gbps Plus bundle delivers improved bandwidth and faster speeds with a Linksys E9450 AX5400 Wi-Fi 6 router, though it will set you back slightly more than at S$49.90/mth (U.P. S$62.90/mth). Frankly, it’s probably one of the best value buys out of the bunch!

As for those looking to score more kills in their favourite shooter games (maybe), or just hate disconnecting mid-match because someone else at home decided to stream a Netflix drama, the 1Gbps Pro Gamer or the 1+1 Gbps Game Bundle are great picks. The first bundle, which is priced at S$54.90/mth (U.P. S$66.90/mth) is tailored to provide the smoothest and most stable connections while gaming, while the second, which costs S$67.90/mth (U.P. S$72.90/mth) is for those who intend to use their Wi-Fi exclusively for such purposes.

On top of that, although both these bundles come with the same ASUS RT-AX86U Wi-Fi 6 Gaming Router, the latter comes with a little extra spice, as you might have guessed from the heavier price tag. It is a subscription to wtfast Gamers Private Network service for PC, and what this basically does is guarantee that your games will utilise the fastest and most secure network path available to the game server when enabled, thereby reducing lag and delivering unparalleled speeds, responsiveness and stability. So, no more pesky disconnects when you’re about to take that chicken dinner home!

Quantity and Quality

Now, what about larger households living in landed properties or multi–generation homes? As powerful as they might be, even dedicated gaming routers might face some difficulty accommodating all the devices in such households. Fret not, Singtel’s covered those bases as well, and there are not one but three different bundles for you to choose from in this category.

The key to having good Internet connections in such homes is to utilise Mesh technology, which like the name suggests, is designed to cover all areas within the home in a “mesh” of Wi-Fi. All three bundles in this category, namely the 2Gbps Mesh, the 2Gbps Mesh Plus and the whopping 10Gbps bundles all feature mesh units that users can leave at different points throughout the house.

The first two bundles offer generally the same items, including a pair of Singtel AX5400 Wi-Fi 6 mesh extenders, but the Plus variant comes with an additional Linksys E9450 AX5400 Wi-Fi 6 router. At S$77.90/mth (U.P. S$82.90/mth), it is a little pricier compared to S$67.90/mth (U.P. S$72.90/mth) for the standard 2Gbps Mesh bundle. But, it is worth mentioning if you have school-going children or teens living with you, the Plus variant is arguably the better pick, as it promises segregated Wi-Fi networks for both work and play, meaning they can work on projects or play games and enjoy media uninterrupted.

Last but not least, we have the 10Gbps bundle, which will set you back an amazing S$172/mth (U.P. S$192/mth). This is designed to handle the heaviest loads possible, such as in households where each member owns and uses multiple devices. In fact, it’s not a stretch to say it’s even designed for corporate workspaces, where each and every user demands the best connection that Singtel can provide for all of their smartphones, notebooks, PCs and other devices.

Spoilt for choice

With so many options to choose from, Singtel has certainly planned out its offerings remarkably well. After all, that excellent understanding of customer needs is part of the reason why the telco bagged the award for Best Fibre Broadband Provider in Singapore at the HWZ Tech Awards 2022. So, for all intents and purposes, if you’re looking to get yourself (and your house) geared up with Wi-Fi 6 tech, or just don’t want to deal with household wars over someone hogging the Wi-Fi, this is a great place to start your search.
