The gorgeous but not so repairable Surface Laptop from Microsoft runs Windows 10 S, a specific configuration of Windows 10 Pro that only runs Windows Store apps.
Thankfully, upgrading the Windows 10 S on the Surface Laptop to full Windows 10 Pro is a quick, two-step process through the Windows Store. And that’s primarily because all the bits are already on the laptop, and the upgrade process is just to unlock the configuration. This upgrade is free till end 2017; after that, it’ll cost US$49.
But what about going the other way, from Windows 10 Pro back to Windows 10 S? Microsoft says the “switch to Pro is one-way”, which suggests there’s no way to revert back to the S version. But is it really?
Well, the Surface Laptop is a freaking PC, so of course there’s a way: what you need is the Surface Laptop recovery image that you can download from Microsoft’s website. Basically: the old-school wipe and reinstall method.
If you want to avoid all this hassle, you can always create a recovery drive before upgrading to Windows 10 Pro.
Now you know.
