Power Your Gadgets Just By Using Them

Australian researchers have discovered a new way to turn mechanical energy into electrical energy, which may give rise to self-powered gadgets in the near future.

Researchers from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology have recently discovered a way to turn mechanical energy into electrical energy. Their method revolves around utilizing piezoelectric materials to generate electrical currents when sufficient force is applied to them. The kicker here is that this can potentially be applied to very thin film, which in turn can be placed on top of all manner of gadgets, including laptops and tablets. Typing, or even touching these coated devices will then be able to power said devices, resulting in an almost endless supply of energy. 

Everlasting batteries and self-powered portable electronics have come one step closer to reality, according to the results of new research by Australian scientists from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT). The researchers successfully measured a piezoelectric thin film's capacity for turning mechanical pressure into electricity. It may sound like an idea from the realm of science fiction, but the discovery could eventually lead to laptops powered through typing.
