Microsoft just announced its new 13-inch Surface Laptop and 12-inch Surface Pro that the company says are thinner, lighter and cheaper. They are also both powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon X Plus processor and an NPU providing 45 TOPS (trillion operations per second) of AI performance, making them Copilot+ PCs.

Copilot+ means that both have AI functions and capabilities built in. These include:

  • Recall (preview) is an opt-in experience that transforms how you search for and rediscover content on your PC. Now you can retrace your steps in seconds to quickly and securely find and get back to an app, website, image or document.
  • Use plain speech and describe in your own words what you are looking for, and improved Windows search will comb through images and documents to find it for you, whether you’re in File Explorer, the Windows Search box or Settings.
  • With Click to Do (preview), you can identify text and images on your screen and take actions that take advantage of local and web-based AI models to be productive.
  • There is an Agentic AI in Settings that will use your own words to “describe” an issue and get recommendations on how to address it. With your permission, it can even complete the actions on your behalf.
  • You’ll be able to bring pro-grade lighting effects to pictures on your Copilot+ PC with Photos Relight.

With the latest addition, Microsoft now has three Surface Laptops with displays in 13-inch, 13.8-inch, and 15-inch sizes.

The new 13-inch FHD touchscreen-enabled Surface Laptop comes in an anodised aluminium chassis and in three colours, Ocean, Violet, and Platinum. According to Microsoft, it is 50% faster than the Surface Laptop 5 released in 2022.

One specification that I found impressive was the stated battery life of up to 23 hours of video playback and up to 16 hours of active web browsing. It also apparently comes with USB-C fast charging using a USB-C PD charger rated at a minimum of 45W or higher, but unfortunately, it is sold separately.

To handle security, the new 13-inch Surface Laptop has a fingerprint reader built into the power button that enables secure sign-in. There is also the Copilot key that “activates” the device’s AI capabilities, like the built-in AI-enhanced camera with Auto Video HDR and AI noise reduction, ensuring that you always look and sound your best.

Retaining its 2-in-1 form factor, the Microsoft 12-inch Surface Pro again comes with a detachable keyboard (that is charged separately), and a Surface Slim Pen that is attached to the back of the tablet for charging and storage. Like the 13-inch Surface Laptop, the new 12-inch Surface Pro also comes in three colours, but this time they are Slate, Ocean and Violet.

Microsoft says that its new Microsoft 12-inch Surface Pro is the thinnest and lightest Copilot+ device available. It further adds that it has up to 16 hours of battery life when used for video playback and up to 12 hours of battery life when undergoing active web usage.
