Linus Torvalds Wants All Notebooks to Have 2560 x 1600 Resolution Displays

Linux OS creator, Linus Torvalds, has taken to social media to rant about the state of resolutions on notebooks. Spurred by the launch of the Google Nexus 10 and 13-inch Retina Display Apple MacBook Pro earlier this week, Torvalds posted on his Google + page: 

“So with even a $399 tablet doing 2560 x 1600 pixel displays, can we please just make that the new standard laptop resolution. Even at 11-inch? Stop with the ‘retina’ crap, just call it ‘reasonable resolution’. The fact that laptops stagnated ten years ago (and even regressed in some cases) at around half that in both directions is just sad.”

Torvalds went on to say that soon even "cellphones will start laughing at the ridiculously bad laptop displays." He also took a shot at any tech journalists who say that high resolutions would mean small fonts:

“I want pixels for high-quality fonts, and yes, I want my fonts small, but ‘high resolution’ really doesn’t equate ‘small fonts’ like some less-than-gifted tech pundits seems to constantly think. In fact, if you have bad vision, sharp good high-quality fonts will help.”

In this, we agree with Torvalds, Apple's Retina Display MacBooks have shown that text can look much sharper and easier on the eyes with high resolution screens. Currently one of the only limitations to high resolution screens is to do with the Windows OS desktop not natively scaling to higher resolutions, although this has changed somewhat with Windows 8's Modern UI Start Screen.
