HP hopes to eliminate the effects of screen tearing by offering FreeSync on its AMD-based laptops. For now, only the HP Envy 15z, which will be refreshed in the first half of 2016, has been confirmed to feature the 6th generation AMD Carrizo APU. According to PC World, the upcoming HP Envy 15z will support FreeSync directly with its Adaptive Sync-capable display, as well as through its HDMI port.
The FreeSync variable refresh rate technology is AMD’s answer to NVIDIA’s G-Sync. The latter was first to market with a collection of G-Sync capable gaming notebooks from ASUS, MSI and Aorus. In stark comparison, we believe the HP Envy 15z will be refreshed and launched in a different market segment than those high-end gaming notebooks.
According to AMD, HP plans to launch more FreeSync-enabled consumer laptops in the second half of this year and these laptops will be powered by AMD Carrizo APUs. This will come as good news for AMD as Carrizo-powered computing devices are made available since our coverage of such systems in June 2015.
Besides this announcement, AMD also reported two new HP 600 series ProBooks; the 14-inch HP ProBook 645 and the 15.6-inch HP ProBook 655, will be powered by the AMD PRO A-series processors. They join the existing HP EliteBook 700 series notebooks.
