The average lifecycle of Macs is following a similar trend seen in smartphones and tablets: it is increasing.
The latest data from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) shows a slow but steady increase in customers holding onto their Macs for three years or more. In fact, the percentage increased from 40% in 2020 to 56% in 2023.
Likewise, the percentage of users in the other lifecycle lengths declined over the past three years. For example, users who keep their Macs for less than a year and users who keep their Macs only for two to three years both saw a 6% drop.
CIRP believes the increasing usage of streaming and web-based apps/programs has contributed to a drop in motivation among Mac users to upgrade. CIRP also thinks the improvement in battery longevity could be the most important factor and that it has reached a satisfactory threshold.
A recent Bloomberg report also discussed the longer lifecycle of Apple products. According to the report, new manufacturing methods, software support and repair services are cited as reasons for the longer lifespans of Apple products.
