Apple launches keyboard service program for MacBook and MacBook Pro

9 models of the MacBook and MacBook Pro are covered under the keyboard service program. Read on to find out more!

Apple just announced a keyboard service program for MacBook and MacBook Pro.

The company said that a small percentage of the keyboards in certain MacBook and MacBook Pro models are affected by one or more of the following issues:

  • letters or characters repeat unexpectedly
  • letters or characters do not appear
  • key(s) feel "sticky" or do not respond in a consistent manner

Apple or Apple Authorized Service Providers will service eligible MacBook and MacBook Pro keyboards for free. The servicing may involve the replacement of one or more keys or the entire keyboard. The eligible models for the program are:

  • MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2015)
  • MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2016)
  • MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, 2017)
  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, Two Thunderbolt 3 Ports)
  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, Two Thunderbolt 3 Ports)
  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports)
  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports)
  • MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2016)
  • MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2017)

In addition, the program covers eligible MacBook and MacBook Pro models for 4 years after the first retail sale of the unit. It also does not extend the standard warranty coverage of the MacBook or MacBook Pro.

If you believe your MacBook or MacBook Pro was affected by this issue, and have paid to have the keyboard repaired, you can contact Apple for a refund.

Earlier in May, Apple was hit with a class action lawsuit over these faulty keyboards. The filing describes how "thousands" of MacBook and MacBook Pro users experienced some form of failure with the keyboards, no thanks to small amounts of dust or debris which hampered normal switch behavior and making keystrokes go unregistered.
