Apple hikes prices of products in Japan by as much as 25%, unlikely to happen in Singapore (for now)

Japanese consumers will have to start paying quite a bit more for Apple products.

Apple has increased the prices for many of its products in Japan. Victims of this price hike includes iPhones, iPads, and Apple Watches.

As a result, Apple has raised the prices of popular products like the iPhone 13 by around 19%. It used to cost ¥98,000, now it's ¥117,800.

The iPhone SE now starts at ¥62,800 where it used to cost ¥57,800 – an increase of 8%. The iPad also now starts at ¥49,800, which is about 25% higher than it used to be.

This move is driven largely by a sharp fall in the value for the yen. At the time of writing, a US dollar will trade for ¥136.20. A year ago it was ¥110.02. That's a fall of nearly 24%.

This is why it's unlikely we will see the same price hikes here in Singapore – at least for the time being. At the time of writing, a US dollar will trade for S$1.39, which is still within a reasonable range even if it is slightly more than what it was trading for a year ago. However, that may change if the Singapore dollar falls further against the US dollar.
