According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is “investigating” the possibility of adding cellular connectivity to Macs in the future.
While this will undoubtedly boost Mac’s connectivity and capability as a go-anywhere, work-anywhere tool, Gurman was quick to temper expectations and said such a Mac won’t launch until 2026 or later.
Apple will need time to roll out its custom-built 5G modem. Word on the street is that the company’s first 5G modem will debut early next year in the next iPhone SE, before being introduced in basic iPads and the rumoured iPhone 17 Air.
As noted in our earlier report, these early modems will likely feature lower specifications, which may not be suitable for a Mac. Apple’s faster, more advanced 5G modems are only expected to debut in 2026.
The grand plan would be to integrate cellular connectivity with Apple Silicon, but Gurman thinks that will take a couple more years.
