AMD will detail its Threadripper processors at SIGGRAPH 2017 at the end of the month, but the company couldn’t resist dropping some tantalizing morsels about the chip ahead of time.
CEO Lisa Su took to Twitter to show off the retail packaging, and there’s only one way to describe it – really big. It also looks like it might be packing a cooler in there as well, and it is far more eye-catching than the cardboard boxes that the regular Ryzen chips shipped in.
Recent rumors have raised the possibility that AMD might be shipping an AIO cooler with Threadripper, but the box Su is holding up doesn’t look like it has room for an AIO unit, even if it is already quite large.

One of the reasons for the outsize dimensions of the box is probably how big the CPU itself is. The size of the 4,094-pin TR4 socket even makes it near impossible to cram on a mini-ITX motherboard, so we’ll probably see mostly ATX and E-ATX models for AMD’s upcoming enthusiast X399 platform.
Threadripper will be offered in two flavors for now – the 12-core 1920X and the 16-core 1950X. They will cost US$799 and US$999 respectively when they hit shelves in early August.
