These are the world’s fastest SD cards *updated with price*
Sony’s new SF-G series of UHS-II SD cards boasts higher speeds than ever before thanks to Sony’s unique firmware.
To say Sony has been at the forefront of digital capture technology for the last few years would certainly not be an understatement. Its progress in pushing Full-frame mirrorless cameras and Single Lens Translucent cameras forward in terms of photography and videography use has certainly opened new avenues for photographers, and so you could say it’s no surprise that they’re now pushing forward with the world’s fastest SD cards.
Dubbed the SF-G series, the cards have the same max read speed of 300MB/s seen on SanDisk Extreme Pro UHS-II SDXC Memory card series, but a much faster write speed of 299MB/s! That means that for once, your SD Card will write to your camera almost as fast as your computer can read from it.
The added speed will be a welcome boon to anyone looking to record videos or engage in high speed photography, as it means the camera won’t be waiting on the card. That said, you’ll still need a camera capable of supporting UHS-II (like the Nikon D500, the Fujifilm X-T2, or the Olympus OM-D EM-1 Mark II) but these are still more common place than CFast and XQD at the moment, so a good number of photographers should be able to take advantage immediately.
The cards are also waterproof with antistatic capabilities to keep your data safe. Sony also offers a free downloadable File Rescue Software to allow for the recovery of photos and videos that may have been accidentally damaged or deleted.
A new high speed SD card reader which supports UHS-II will also be introduced to the market, allowing faster transfer of data to a PC with a USB 3.1 Gen 1 interface. The SF-G Series SD cards and MRW-S1 will both be available in the Asia Pacific region from April 2017 onwards in sizes from 32GB to 128GB, but pricing has yet to be announced.
*Update*
The SF-G series cards will be priced as such: 32 GB – S$135.00, 64 GB – S$220.00, 128 GB – S$455.00. They're now listed to be available from the third week of March locally, while pricing for the MRW-S1 is still yet to be released.
