Some NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070s have memory issues that require a BIOS update to fix

Do you own an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070? You’ll probably want to fire up GPU-Z and check on the manufacturer of the card’s memory. Over the past few weeks, reports have surfaced of memory issues in certain NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 cards, specifically the ones outfitted with Micron memory.

The problems reported include things like flickering and corrupted graphics when the affected card is overclocked, although some users have supposedly noticed issues even at stock speeds.

The earlier batches of the GeForce GTX 1070 used Samsung’s GDDR5 memory modules for their VRAM, marking the first time such high performance memory modules were used in reference design. However, in order to keep up with demand, manufacturers began sourcing memory modules from Micron, therein giving rise to the problem.

NVIDIA has even acknowledged the issue, saying on the GeForce.com forums that it would be releasing a VBIOS update that would manage the voltage being supplied to the VRAM more effectively to accommodate different memory modules. In fact, some users have said that manually limiting the voltage to the memory made their cards more stable.

That update is now rolling out from individual card manufacturers – so far, EVGA, Gainward and Palit already have new updates ready, while others like ASUS and MSI are still working on their respective fixes.

Gigabyte is reportedly unaffected, as it did not switch to Micron memory during manufacturing.
