Sandy Bridge-E CPUs Not Shipping with Stock Heatsink and Fan?

It is rumored that the upcoming Core i7 processor from Intel, the 3820, 3930K and the 3960X will all ship without a cooler in the box.

Intel's next consumer CPUs — the Sandy Bridge-E range — will ship without a heatsink and fan. Intel will instead offer its own-brand cooling solutions for the new chips, but they will not be included in the CPU's retail box.

It is also reported that Intel has taken the unusual decision of shipping them without a reference cooler. Besides reducing expenses, the thinking is that this move will affect just a small subset of users, considering Sandy Bridge-E is targeted at enthusiasts and the majority of this crowd will install third party cooling solutions. The Sandy Bridge-E chips will also require a new LGA2011 motherboard that is powered by new the X79 chipset.
