Samsung Announces Server-Grade 16GB DDR4 DRAM Modules

Just last month in June, Samsung announced the 8GB and 18GB DDR4 DRAM modules. The performance of the newer RAM modules is projected to be twice as fast as current DDR3 ones in the near future. At the same time, the DDR4 modules will supposedly operate at a lower voltage of 1.2V. This will result in power savings of over 40%, in comparison to their DDR3 counterparts.
Samsung also aims to manufacture DDR4 DRAM based on the 20nm-class process in the future. The company is also working on the "completion of the JEDEC (Joint Electron Device Engineering Council) standardization of DDR4 technologies and product specifications." In the meantime, users looking to upgrade to DDR4 DRAM modules will also need to wait for processors that feature DDR4-capable memory controllers.
