Quark Takes a Backseat as First Intel Edison Products will be Powered by Atom SoCs
Intel has announced the extension of Intel Edison to a family of development boards. The key development is the use of a 22nm Intel Silvermont dual-core Atom SoC to replace the Quark SoC. Initially, Intel said the Edison development board was supposed to be based on the latter.
Intel has announced the extension of Intel Edison to a family of development boards. The key development is the use of a 22nm Intel Silvermont dual-core Atom SoC to replace the Quark SoC. Initially, Intel said the Edison development board was supposed to be based on the latter SoC.
The new dual-core Atom SoC, based on the same microarchitecture as the Atom Bay Trail, is rated to perform at 500MHz, with support for multi-threading. Intel says its decision to replace the Quark SoC with the more traditional Atom SoC is to “best meet a broad range of market needs." At the same time, the Atom SoC will bring hardware improvements that include an additional MCU and a 70-pin connector that supports over 30 I/O interfaces.
Intel also added the new Atom SoC-based Intel Edison will result in a larger footprint. In comparison, the Quark-based Edison development board was initially announced to be just the size of an SD storage card. Intel hasn’t abandoned the notion of releasing Quark-based development boards yet as the inclusion of Atom SoCs is just an extension of the Edison family.
