Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 to Power Windows 8 Tablet and Lenovo Smart TV
Qualcomm's Snapdragon processors are moving beyond the Android smartphone and tablet space, powering a new wave of Windows 8 tablet and smart TVs starting with Lenovo's K91 SmartTV that was announced at CES 2012.
During CES 2012, we've seen a slew of tablets based on Windows 8 and smart TVs by new entrants into the market. These devices share one common point - they are powered by Qualcomm's ARM-based Snapdragon S4 processors.
The former, which was demonstrated by Qualcomm's CEO Dr. Paul Jacobs during his keynote, provides a glimpse into what Microsoft's Windows 8 is capable of with the ARM architecture. Furthermore, Qualcomm's entry into the tablet space with Windows 8 and its Snapdragon S4 MSM8960 reference hardware tablet will expand more options for tablets to tap into the fast LTE network.
Beyond its usual smartphone and tablet support, Qualcomm's Snapdragon S4 MPQ8064 processor, featuring a 1.5GHz quad-core CPU and Adreno 320 graphics, powers the first smart TV from Lenovo. The use of Qualcomm’s Wi-Fi connectivity means you're looking at an internet-enabled TV that also streams videos and engages in multi-player online gaming and local content to the television and other screens in the home. Games and apps, powered by Google Android 4.0 and available on the Android Market and Lenovo Store, brings a new level of interaction to the user.
Qualcomm's new range of S4 quad-core processors will also be available across smartphones and tablets in the near future. Though the company wasn't able to comment on which specific manufacturers will be utilizing the S4 processors, we should be expecting devices powered by it to make an appearance very soon, perhaps at Mobile World Congress 2012.
