NVIDIA Backs Miracast Wi-Fi Display Technology with Tegra 3

NVIDIA has announced its support for Miracast, the new wireless display technology from the Wi-Fi Alliance. Devices that are certified to support Miracast, are able to deliver AV content between devices on Wi-Fi connections without the need for existing Wi-Fi networks.

The company said that though there are existing open standards like DLNA, NVIDIA claims that it is plagued with interoperability issues that have restricted its industry-wide adoption.

With adopting Miracast technology, NVIDIA has integrated this wireless display technology into the Tegra mobile platform. The company's complete Miracast solution will allow OEMs implementing Tegra SoC in their mobile phones and tablets to manufacture a Miracast-certified product with less hassle.

"The Tegra optimized Miracast solution is comprised of two major components -- the multimedia (video/audio) processing block and the industry compliant wireless display networking stack. The multimedia processing block takes advantage of Tegra's multi-core graphics engine and dedicated hardware video/audio codecs to accelerate the decoding of video content, render graphics surfaces and perform the final compositing operations before encoding into a H.264 bit stream to be wirelessly transmitted."

With NVIDIA's full support behind Miracast, it may just be the added impetus for display manufacturers to follow suit and adopt this standard into their equipment in the near future.
