With CES just round the corner, it’s no surprise that teasers of good things to come have begun trickling out from the different brands. Over the past few weeks, MSI has shared sneak peeks of the features that will debut on its next-generation motherboards, including improved audio, thermal management, and faster connectivity solutions.
MSI is also introducing features to improve the reliability of its boards and the components you install on them, including something called M.2 Shield and an improved version of its DDR4 Steel Armor. The former takes the form of a metallic shield with thermal padding that sits on top of your M.2 drive, and helps lower SSD temperatures to prevent performance throttling.

In addition, the upgraded version of Steel Armor is now forged from a single piece, with more soldering points for better grounding and EMI protection.
Another notable feature is the increased prevalence of USB 3.1 (Gen 2) ports (courtesy of the new ASMedia ASM2142 controller), which supports speeds up to 10Gbps. MSI says even its affordable Tomahawk boards will feature it, so you won’t have to shell out for a high-end board to enjoy faster data transfers.
Next-generation boards will boast better support for USB 3.1 (Gen 2) front headers as well, for improved compatibility with new cases like the Phanteks Enthoo Elite.
Audio hasn’t been neglected either, and the new boards will host MSI’s latest Audio Boost 4 gaming audio solution, which comes with a built-in amplifier that can automatically detect your headphone impedance.
Finally, you can expect visual flourishes like a customizable RGB audio line that highlights the physical isolation of the audio components and complements MSI’s Mystic Light RGB lighting.
