Intel: Ivy Bridge's Graphics Processor to Support 4K resolutions

Intel announced at IDF this past week that Ivy Bridge will support 4K video resolutions using the integrated GPU. This means that Ivy Bridge will support video resolutions up to 4096 x 2304 pixels.The highest resolution that is supported by some 30-inch monitors on the market today is 2560 x 1600 pixels.

With their Multi-Format Codec Engine called MFX, Intel claims that their next-generation chipset can run multiple 4K videos simultaneously. Intel has been taking notes from YouTube who announced support for 4K video resolution in July 2010. Hence, we can expect display manufacturers to play catch-up as they churn out their hardware to support the 4K video resolution. The toughest challenge will be convincing consumers to part with their dollars for these extravagantly priced displays (up to US$36,000 at this point of time).
