Globalfoundries completes acquisition of IBM microelectronics business

Globalfoundries has completed the acquisition of IBM’s microelectronic business. This marks the finalization of the deal that was announced in October last year. With this deal, IBM’s existing foundries in the New York and Vermont, United States of America, will be transferred to Globalfoundries. Globalfoundries will also enjoy a 10-year exclusive agreement to supply chips to IBM.

The former personnel of IBM microelectronics divisions will be absorbed into the acquiring company. Sanjay Jha, CEO of Globalfoundries, values the addition of these highly-skilled staff members, whom he feels that are key to the company’s plans to proceed to the 10- and 7nm fabrication process. Over 16,000 IBM patents will be transferred Globalfoundries, and the company will also take over IBM's RF (radio frequency) silicon-on-insulator (RFSOI) and silicon-germanium (SiGe) semiconductor technology. They will complement Globalfoundries existing wireless front-end module solutions as it advances with its next-gen silicon manufacturing technology to address the requirements of the automotive and home markets.
