Gigabyte’s GeForce GTX 1080 Mini ITX 8G may be the smallest yet

Gigabyte has revealed what looks to be the world’s smallest GeForce GTX 1080 graphics card. The Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1080 Mini ITX 8G measures just 169mm long, which means it’ll be right at home in a mini-ITX build.

Gigabyte has revealed what looks to be the world’s smallest GeForce GTX 1080 graphics card. The Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1080 Mini ITX 8G measures just 169mm long, which means it’ll be right at home in a mini-ITX build.

This is the second mini-ITX GeForce GTX 1080 card we’ve soon so far, the first being last year’s Zotac GeForce GTX 1080 Mini. However, that card is a good 42mm longer than the Gigabyte model, which shaves the centimeters off by going with a diminutive single-fan configuration.

In fact, this is the first GeForce GTX 1080 to officially be within the mini-ITX specification, as the 211mm length of the Zotac card means that it will extend beyond a 170 x 170mm mini-ITX motherboard.

The semi-passive 90mm fan will stop spinning under a certain temperature threshold, and the card also features three heat pipes to channel heat away from the GPU.

Fortunately, despite its size, the card hasn’t needed to compromise too much in terms of clock speeds. It sticks to reference clocks of a 1,607MHz base clock and 1,733MHz boost clock in Gaming Mode, and even exceeds that slightly in OC Mode with a 1,632MHz base clock and 1,771MHz boost clock.

The card is powered by a single 8-pin power connector and sports a 5+2-phase power design.

Competition could be coming in the form of the Radeon RX Vega Nano that AMD teased at SIGGRAPH 2017, but until then, this is probably the smallest and fastest card around.

NVIDIA and laptop manufacturers may be trying to reduce the footprint of laptops with Max-Q technology, but there are also gamers looking to build smaller desktop rigs.

As for when you can get your hands on one, there’s unfortunately no news yet on price or availability.
