Gigabyte Launches Low-Cost AM1 Platform Motherboards
Gigabyte has launched two AM1 platform motherboards for low-cost computing solutions. The boards support AMD Kabini APUs that are marked under the Athlon and Sempron APU brands. One key feature of the new Kabini APU is the total on-die integration of the Platform Control Hub (PCH).

The AM1 Gigabyte boards are the GA-AM1M-S2H and GA-AM1M-S2P. According to Gigabyte, besides the on-die PCH feature, the CMOS memory has also been integrated into the APU. Therefore, removing the APU will reset the BIOS settings of the board, back to their default values. However, the company has overcome this issue by installing an additional RTC IC component that will not save the BIOS settings , but also the system time as well. The boards also boast of Ultra Durable IV components, and the Dual BIOS feature.

Gigabyte is one of the first few motherboard manufacturers to launch AM1 platform motherboards, and we also managed to catch a glimpse of MSI's offering in early March this year. Companies like ASRock, ASUS, BIOSTAR, and ECS are expected to follow suit very soon.
