FSP has released the Hydro PTM+, a liquid-cooled power supply that joins the sparse ranks of manufacturers who’ve attempted this unconventional cooling method.

To be clear, the Hydro PTM+ is still mainly air-cooled. It just uses liquid-cooling to boost its maximum output by 200W to 1,400W, in this way exceeding the 1,200W capacity it would be limited to on air cooling.

In addition, it supports a semi-passive mode that allows for the lowest possible noise output during low or moderate loads, or when power demand is below 50 per cent with liquid-cooling enabled.

If you’re just running off air-cooling, the load threshold is set at 30 per cent, above which the built-in 135mm fluid dynamic bearing fan will spin up.

It also boasts an 80 Plus Platinum efficiency rating, a fully modular design (it uses ribbon cables) for neater cabling, and RGB lighting that can be controlled using ASUS’ Aura Sync software.

The company talked up the quality of its components, which includes 100 per cent Japanese electrolytic capacitors and a range of over-current, over-voltage, and over-temperature protections.

FSP worked with Bitspower on this PSU, and the first 500 units will come with unisleeved red and black cables and a Bitspower AIO liquid-cooling kit, including a pump, radiator, and 120mm LED fan.

The 2-year warranty may give some pause, but that may be a result of it also covering the liquid-cooling components, which usually aren’t covered by the lengthy warranties we’ve come to expect for PSUs.

There’s a steep US$699 price to be paid for liquid-cooling support, which places the Hydro PTM+ among the most expensive PSUs on the market.
