AMD's Hondo APU will Only Support Windows 8 at Launch

AMD's new Hondo APU will only support Windows 8 at launch, according to The Inquirer who spoke to Mr. Steve Belt, corporate VP of ultra-low power products. AMD is forgoing support for the Android OS for the time being; however, it is possible to install Linux on devices powered by this new APU.

Mr. Belt said that AMD decided not to support the Android OS for now as the company doesn't want to spread itself too thin into other markets. They would want to focus on the Windows 8 RT market before expanding into others. He also said that there isn't anything to hinder device tinkerers from operating Linux on these new Hondo APUs.

AMD expects Windows 8 to have a market share of up to 20 percent for tablet devices and it hopes to do well by focusing its current hardware efforts at this important market segment. Its decision not to support the Android OS should not be due to technical issues as ASUS has demonstrated dual-booting Android alongside Windows 8 on their 18.4-inch ASUS Transformer AiO at Computex earlier this year. Its large 10-point LED-backlit display, when detached, may not be the sleekest Android tablet, but we do give the company its due recognition in offering a glimpse of what's in store for such devices with the launch of Windows 8 on October 26.
