AMD FreeSync technology not supported across the board
According to The Tech Report, the AMD FreeSync technology doesn’t enjoy across-the-board support on its Radeon GPUs. FreeSync is the company’s answer to NVIDIA’s G-Sync; both technologies attempt to align a graphics card’s draw rates with the refresh rates of the monitor for smoother display.

The recently announced has support for AMD FreeSync, and cards that feature the Radeon R9 290X and R9 290 GPUs also support AMD’s variable refresh rate technology. However, it is uncertain if the Radeon R7 260X and Radeon HD 7790 will support AMD FreeSync though they have support for AMD TrueAudio technology.
According to AMD, the FreeSync technology makes use the company’s hardware and software solutions, and also DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync specifications of VESA, to allow the supported graphics card to moderate the refresh rate of the DisplayPort 1.2a-compliant monitor. Hence, it is imperative that consumers check the specifications of the Radeon card first with the add-in card manufacturer to ascertain if it’s compatible with FreeSync. At the time of publshing, the AMD Radeon GPUs with FreeSync support are as follows:
- Radeon R9 290X
- Radeon R9 290
- Radeon R9 285
