Robert Hallock, Head of Global Technical Marketing at AMD, took to Reddit last week for an AMA session about the company’s upcoming product lines. As expected, Hallock was limited in what he could say, but he did manage to confirm details on the projected release dates for AMD’s Polaris and Zen products.

According to Hallock, Polaris will launch around the middle of 2016, with Zen to follow later in the year. Zen will also reportedly mark a shift in AMD’s processor release strategy, which has seen it focus mainly on its APU products up till now. Since Piledriver, AMD has not released a new core in the desktop FX product line, but that will change with Zen.

In fact, when Zen finally arrives in late 2016, it will first launch in the FX product line before being released as an APU.

Hallock also added that all AMD CPUs and GPUs in the near future will utilize GlobalFoundries 14nm FinFET transistor technology, which promises significant improvements in power consumption and performance over existing products. This also has the potential to help AMD close the gap in these areas with NVIDIA and Intel.
