Micro-LED technology could be ready for consumer devices in three to four years.

Epistar chairman Lee Biing-jye reportedly said that smartwatches would be the first major consumer devices to use Micro-LED with volume adoption likely to happen in three to four years. Lee added that smartwatch makers have expressed interest in Micro-LED displays. It would probably take four to five years for TVs to adopt Micro-LED technology.

Apple has been rumoured to be developing Micro-LED technology for many years. Bloomberg claimed in 2018 that Apple is developing its own Micro-LED displays at a secret facility near its California headquarters.

There are reports that Apple is working with Taiwan-based company PlayNitride over cooperation in the MicroLED market. This prompted Foxconn to invest in Micro-LED so that it would be in a good position to secure orders from Apple when the iPhone maker switches over from OLED. Three months ago, Focus Taiwan claimed that Apple invested about US$344 million in a new plant in Taiwan to make Mini-LED and Micro-LED displays.
