Meta has reportedly ditched plans for a premium mixed reality (MR) headset meant to compete with the Apple Vision Pro.
Two Meta employees shared with The Information that the Reality Labs division - the department responsible for the development of augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR) and MR products (MR) - was instructed to stop the development of a high-end MR headset.
The decision was apparently made after a product review meeting with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. The premium MR headset was said to have high-resolution micro-OLED screens and is slated for launch in 2027.
The purported lacklustre sales of the Apple Vision Pro and its failure to garner significant consumer interest in AR/VR/MR devices are cited as possible reasons for Meta's cancellation of the high-end MR headset.
Despite the cancellation of the premium MR headset, Meta is believed to still be working on the Quest 4 for a launch in 2026. Similar to the Quest 3, the Quest 4 is expected to be priced at around US$500.
Meta is also making the software aspect a priority for the Quest 4 headset. It opened up the Horizon OS to third-party manufacturers a few months ago in an attempt to build an inclusive VR ecosystem.
