During its At The CheckUp event, Google shared its new AI-first approach to incorporating AI into products and services people use daily to gain tailored, personalised insights that users can explore based on their needs and preferences.

Fitbit and Google Research are working together to build a Personal Health Large Language Model based on Gemini, to provide personalised health and wellness features via the Fitbit mobile app. It will examine the data generated by a user’s Fitbit and Pixel devices to get even more insights and recommendations.

For example, it may be able to analyse sleep patterns and sleep quality, and suggest how you might change the intensity of your workout based on those insights.

Whereas most health-tracking apps display insights via charts and graphs, users will be able to ask questions in a natural way, à la ChatGPT, and the Fitbit app is able to draw connections and correlations between the data. For example, you could dig into how many active zone minutes (AZMs) you had and the correlation with how restorative your sleep was.

Fitbit's active zone minutes are related to your heart rate during exercise and are logged whenever the user’s heart rate is elevated. More minutes are awarded for higher-intensity workouts. Users earn one Active Zone Minute for each minute spent in the fat-burning zone and two Active Zone Minutes per minute spent in the cardio zone.

Right now, Fitbit Labs is giving Premium users early access to these AI features to test and give feedback on.
