Apple's more affordable Vision Pro device could use a bigger and lower resolution display.
TheElec noticed a change in Apple's supply chain management for the OLED-on-Silicon (OLEDoS) panels, indicating that Apple might be looking at suppliers outside Sony.
Sony currently produces 1.42-inch OLEDoS panels with a pixel density of 3,400 pixels per inch (PPI) for use in the Vision Pro. However, because of the high specs of these displays, Sony can only make up to 900,000 panels per year.
Apple has therefore issued a request for information (RFI) to Samsung Display and LG Display to assess their capabilities in manufacturing OLED-on-Silicon (OLEDoS) panels ranging from 2.0 to 2.1 inches with a pixel density of 1,700 PPI.
Could these bigger, lower-resolution displays be used in a more affordable Vision Pro device? That is certainly possible according to several reports.
Bloomberg wrote in October 2023 that Apple could lower the cost of the Vision Pro by using a less powerful processor and lower-quality displays.
By removing or downgrading certain features like the display, Apple could possibly sell the lower-end Vision Pro between US$1,500 to US$2,000, which makes it significantly more affordable than the current US$3,499 Vision Pro.
