Critics may slam the Apple Watch for being too expensive, but the price factor did not hinder Apple from becoming the top seller of wearable devices in Q2 2015.
According to analyst firm Canalys, Apple is estimated to have shipped 4.2 million units of the Apple Watch in Q2 which "easily overtook Fitbit, Xiaomi and all the smart watch vendors". The analyst firm considers this a feat since Apple missed the holiday season at the end of 2014 and had initial supply constraints for the Apple Watch.
However, Canalys thinks that Apple and other wearable vendors continue to face challenges to make the smartwatch a smash hit. Potential areas of improvement for smartwatches include performance, battery life, sensor integration and the quality of third-party apps.
Another analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo shared yesterday that Apple will continue to see modest sales of its Apple Watch for the rest of the year. This differs from a more gloomy picture painted by Pacific Crest Securities analyst Brad Hargreaves, who believes the demand for the Apple Watch is slowing down after the initial media buzz.
Current market leader Samsung may not need to worry about its crown for now, but the availability of native apps and watchOS 2 may give the Apple Watch a boost in the race to the top.
