When the Apple Watch was first announced in September last year, Apple failed to disclose any details about the device's battery life and merely said that it would need to be charged nightly. However, according to information gleamed from people with knowledge about the watch's development, we now have some actual figures to share.
As of 2014, the targets that Apple has set for the Apple Watch is allegedly 2.5 to 4 hours of active use, 19 hours of mixed usage, 3 days of standby time and 4 days if left in sleeping mode. Furthermore, it is also reported that current performance falls short of these targets and that the watch will only last 2 to 3 days in either standby or sleep mode. The target of 19 hours of mixed usage also seems unattainable at this point.
The problem lies with the battery and also partly compounded by Apple's decision to use a high quality display and powerful processor. The Apple S1 chip is said to be able to provide similar levels to performance as the A5 chip that debuted in the iPhone 4S. Additionally the Retina-class display is capable of refreshing at a smooth 60 fps.
Finally, Apple is said to be frantically testing battery life in various real-world usage scenarios and allegedly as many as 3000 test units are in circulation right now. So don't be surprised if you happen to see it on the wrist of someone next to you on the bus.
