Nope, Apple reportedly has no plans for a smart ring

Contrary to some rumours, Apple is not planning on nor working on a smart ring.

Early this year, there was news that Apple was working on and accelerating the development of its smart ring.

The report said multiple registrations of smart ring-related patents at the US Patent and Trademark Office were proof of this.

Just last week, CCS Insight released a report predicting that Apple would launch a smart ring by 2026 to compete with Samsung.

However, famous Apple analyst Mark Gurman from Bloomberg believes the opposite is true. In his latest newsletter, Gurman said that while Apple did explore the idea, the company has no plans to launch such a device and is not actively working on developing one.

Though smart rings are arguably easier to wear and very pretty capable health trackers, the lack of a screen means limited functionality. Also, there are some concerns regarding the accuracy of their sensors.

Gurman thinks Apple will instead seek to lower the entry price of an Apple Watch. There’s a lot of talk that the next Apple Watch SE will feature a plastic case, which will reduce manufacturing costs and enable Apple to sell it at an even lower price.

Some expected Apple to announce the new Apple Watch SE at the company’s recent Glowtime event, but that did not happen. There’s a good chance it’ll debut early next year alongside the rumoured new iPhone SE.
