One of the most requested features from Apple Watch users is third-party faces. Unfortunately, based on a recent interview with Apple VPs Kevin Lynch and Deidre Caldbeck, it looks like this feature won't be coming anytime soon.
In an interview with Tages-Anzeiger, a Swiss national daily, Lynch and Caldbeck both said that since the watch face is essentially the "home screen" of the Apple Watch, there's a need to ensure that it's consistent and stable.
They said that it was imperative that the watch face continues to work as intended whenever there's a major watchOS update – something that third-party watch faces might not or cannot do.
In other words, Apple doesn't trust developers to not mess up its rather excellent smart watch.
They also said that they understand that users want more customization options and quicker access to information and apps which is why watchOS 10 introduced Smart Stack – a new feature that introduces widgets that can be quickly accessed simply by turning the Digital Crown.
In addition, in response to users' requests for more watch faces, Apple is adding two new watch faces to watchOS 10: Palette and Snoopy.
Palette users distinct colours to show the time whereas the Snoopy watch faces features animation of Snoopy and Woodstock from the comic Peanuts.
