The cheaper Apple Vision Pro is said to have half the resolution of the current model.
Apple is reportedly in the process of testing low-resolution display panels for its cheaper Vision Pro model.
TheElec claims that Apple recently received glass board-based OLED panels from Japan Display Inc. (JDI). These OLED panels are said to have a resolution of 1,500ppi – that's around half the resolution of the current Vision Pro (3,391ppi).
Aside from JDI, Apple also requested OLEDoS panels from Samsung Display that have a pixel density count of 1,700ppi. The lower resolution is due to the use of glass, not silicon for the board. The iPhone maker is expected to switch from silicon to glass to reduce development and manufacturing costs for the cheaper Vision Pro model.
As demand for the Vision Pro fell "sharply beyond expectations", Apple was rumoured to have paused work on the Vision Pro 2 to focus on the cheaper model. An IDC report in June said Apple will struggle to sell more than 500,000 Vision Pro devices this year.
Bloomberg shared last year that Apple is considering ditching the EyeSight feature, using fewer external cameras and sensors, and pairing the cheaper Vision Pro with a less powerful processor and lower-quality displays. The lower-end Vision Pro will likely be priced between US$1,500 (~S$2,029) to US$2,000 (~S$2,706).
It is unclear whether a lower price tag will be sufficient to attract consumers to the lower-end Vision Pro. In our review of the Vision Pro, we found that one of the key reasons to buy the device is the high-quality output of the micro-OLED displays that made it perfect for movies and videos.
Still, if the lower-resolution display manages to be good enough that it's difficult to discern from the pricier Vision Pro, then perhaps customers won't mind. In the meantime, Apple is working to provide more content and get more apps onto its visionOS platform.
